Report: Haslett to become defensive coordinator

Jim Haslett agreed Tuesday to become the Washington Redskins' defensive coordinator, the second major hire for new coach Mike Shanahan. A person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press about the move on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't made an announcement. Haslett was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints from 2000 to 2005 and interim coach for the St. Louis Rams in 2008 after Scott Linehan was fired. He has also been a defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers. Haslett spent last season as head coach of the Florida Tuskers of the new United Football League.

Trio combines for 65 points in BU's 75-63 win over UMBC

John Holland scored 25 points and Corey Lowe and Jake O'Brien scored 20 each to lead Boston University to a 75-63 victory over visiting UMBC. The trio combined to hit 10 of the Terriers' 11 3-pointers, as BU (8-8, 3-1 America East Conference) won its third straight game. Chauncey Gilliam and Chris De La Rosa scored 13 points each for the Retrievers (1-14, 0-2), who also got 12 points and 13 rebounds from Jake Wasco and 10 points from Adrian Satchell.

Rankings: : St. Mary's (11-2, 4-1 Capital Athletic Conference) rose three spaces to No. 17 in the D3hoops.com Top 25. Junior guard Alex Franz (Cardinal Gibbons) has 3.9 steals a game, second in the nation in Division III. The Seahawks have won 13 straight regular-season games. Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Dunbar) is 14th in the country with a league-best 22.3 points per game.

Spring training game tickets to go on sale Saturday

Individual game tickets for the Orioles' 16 spring training games at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla., will go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. The first game will be against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 3. Ravens' Tyree among football players in Millrose dash

David Tyree of the Ravens, Willie Gault and Tim Dwight are scheduled to run the "Super 60," a 60-meter dash, at the Millrose Games on Jan. 29 in New York. Organizers plan to add other football players to the field. USA Track and Field CEO Doug Logan said the race isn't a publicity stunt. "This is a real distance. They're real athletes. We're not doing Bill Veeck putting a midget in front of a pitcher," Logan said of the St. Louis Browns owner's 1951 promotion. Tyree ran track at Syracuse. Gault, 49, won a bronze medal in the 110 hurdles at the 1983 world championships and holds masters world records in his age group in the 100 and 200. Dwight was a Big Ten track champ at Iowa.

Rockets promote Dorsey from D-League Rio Grande

The Houston Rockets have called up Joey Dorsey (Douglass) from Rio Grande Valley of the NBA Development League to add depth to their front line. Dorsey, 6 feet 8, was assigned to the Vipers on Nov. 13 and averaged 14.9 points and 13.3 rebounds while shooting 65 percent from the field in 16 games. He was a second-round pick out of Memphis in 2008.

Pro soccer: : Crystal Palace Baltimore named Todd Wawrousek assistant coach. Wawrousek was an assistant for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, helping guide the club to the 2007 USL1 playoffs, the 2008 USL1 championship and the 2009 USL1 finals. He was women's head coach at Gettysburg from 1990 to 2007, going 195-108-12.

WNBA: : Women's Basketball Hall of Famer Marianne Stanley, who coached Old Dominion to three national titles, was added to the Washington Mystics' staff as an assistant, primarily responsible for coaching post players. She was the Mystics' head coach in 2002 and 2003.

College gymnastics: : Maryland's Kesley Cofsky was voted the East Atlantic Gymnastic League's Rookie of the Week.

College swimming and diving: : Towson junior Meredith Budner and sophomore Caroline Baker were named the Colonial Athletic Association women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively.
