ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

THE BALTIMORE SUN

McDonogh, track and field

The Eagles' senior captain set a meet record at the Montgomery Invitational in Landover on Saturday while turning in the second-best long jump in the nation this year (23 feet, 6 inches). He was also second in the 55-meter high hurdles, finishing in 7.63 seconds, the 10th-fastest time in the nation this year. Both performances qualify Gross, 5 feet 9 and 150 pounds, for the Nike National Meet in Boston in March. "Usually in the hurdles, the best competitors are 6-2 or 6-3, but Justin is such a good technician and he's fast as can be," Eagles coach Jeff Sanborn said. Gross, 17, plans to compete as a decathlete in college.

Others considered: : Robby Creese, track and field, Glenelg; Brian Richardson, wrestling, Owings Mills; Curtis Taylor, wrestling, South River; Davon Usher, basketball, Digital Harbor; Tyler Washington, basketball, Arundel

Tenicia Spence, Western, basketball

The junior shooting guard has had her biggest games against some of the No. 3 Doves' toughest opponents this season, including scoring a career-high 16 points in Friday's 60-52 win over then-No. 9 City. Spence, 5 feet 6, scored 11 points in the second half and hit a 3-pointer from the corner midway through the final quarter to give the Doves a 51-47 advantage that City would not make up. Her three 3-pointers helped offset the hot shooting of City guard LaShay Taft, who cut the Western lead to two late in the third quarter only to see Spence answer with her own 3. Spence, who had nine points in the 63-18 win over Patterson last week, averages 8.4 points.

Others considered: : Shantrel Oliver, River Hill, basketball; Emily Russo, Glenelg, basketball; LaShay Taft, City, basketball; Sheronne Vails, Arundel, basketball
