Robert Thomas Randall, funeral director

Robert Thomas Randall, a former funeral director and district sales representative for a New England funeral home supplier, died Thursday of pneumonia at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.

The Arnold resident was 75.

Mr. Randall, the son of a Methodist minister and a homemaker, was born and raised in Centreville.

After graduating from Rehoboth Beach High School in 1953, he served as a private in the Army.

He was a 1959 graduate of the Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia.

He began his career in 1959 at the old Tickner's Funeral Home on West North Avenue, and later worked at Gladhil Funeral Home in Middletown, before joining Barranco & Sons Funeral Home in Severna Park in 1971.

In 1976, Mr. Randall became the Maryland, Delaware, Washington and Northern Virginia representative of the Dodge Co., a Boston funeral home supplier. He retired last month.

Mr. Randall had been a longtime member of Region III of Disaster Mortuary Response Team - DMORT - that assists in identifying remains of those killed as a result of a major disaster.

In the wake of 9/11, Mr. Randall traveled with DMORT to Shanksville, Pa., to help reclaim and identify the bodies of those who were lost on United Airlines Flight 93, which had been hijacked by terrorists and crashed in a field. He also was in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to help identify the dead.

Mr. Randall was a lifetime member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association, Virginia Funeral Directors Association, Delmarva Funeral Service Association, the Academy of Funeral Service Practitioners, British Institute of Embalmers and the Maryland State Funeral Suppliers Association.

He enjoyed duck hunting, crabbing and biking, and was an accomplished woodworker.

Mr. Randall was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, 78 Church Road, Arnold, where services will be held at 11 a.m. today.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, the former Flossie Taylor; two sons, R. Thomas Randall of Owings Mills and Russell Randall of Severna Park; and four grandchildren.
