SHOOTINGS, BEATING RAISE HOMICIDE TOLL TO 5

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Two men were fatally shot Sunday night in separate and apparently unrelated incidents in the city, police said.

In another homicide, a man beaten Jan. 4 died days later at an area hospital.

About 10:05 p.m., an Eastern District officer responded to a call in the 900 block of N. Glover St. in the Madison-Eastend neighborhood for a shooting and found a 38-year-old man slumped over the steering wheel of a 2000 Toyota Avalon. The passenger-side door was open, and police believe the shooter had been in the vehicle with the man.

The victim's name was not released pending notification of next of kin. Last year, 25 people were slain inside vehicles, according to police statistics.

About 20 minutes later, a man was shot in the 3900 block of Eierman Ave. in the Belair-Parkside community and died a short time later at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Police believe Derrick Taylor, 20, had left Sheldon's bar, stopped at a nearby convenience store and was shot as he returned home.

Taylor, who was on probation stemming from a June 2009 drug conviction, collapsed from gunshot wounds on the front steps of his home, police said.

Police reported Monday that a man severely beaten Jan. 4 in the 1300 block of N. Milton Ave. died three days later at Hopkins of his injuries. Police said Sean Johnson, 41, of the 2700 block of Tivoly Ave. was found in the street about 5:20 p.m. by police responding to a report of an injured man. Johnson received 15 years in prison in July 2008 for a drug distribution conviction, with all but five years suspended. The killings bring this year's total to five.
