Suspect in teen's rape, fatal stabbing pleads not guilty

Dante Parrish, 35, pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and sexual offense charges connected with the Nov. 10 rape and stabbing of 15-year-old Jason Mattison Jr., a sophomore at West Baltimore's Vivian T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy. A Baltimore grand jury indicted Parrish last month. He was released early from prison last January after winning a new trial on a separate murder charge. The boy's body was found in his aunt's second-floor closet; he was gagged with a pillowcase and had been stabbed repeatedly in the head and throat. Parrish is being held at the Baltimore City Detention Center without bail. His trial has been set for April 14.

Arundel sheriff's deputy serving warrant is attacked

An Anne Arundel County sheriff's deputy was assaulted Wednesday while trying to serve a warrant and used a Taser to stun the attacker, the Sheriff's Office said Friday. Deputies said when they and county police officers went to serve a warrant on a man in Edgewater, the homeowner became agitated and combative, and a deputy used a Taser to subdue and arrest him. The warrant was not for him, but for a friend who sometimes stayed with him, they said. Michael S. Haley, 42, was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center as a precaution, where he refused treatment, deputies said. He was charged with assault and related counts, and released on his own recognizance. The man the warrant was for, Paul Bergquist, 44, also of Edgewater, turned himself in Thursday, said Sheriff Ronald S. Bateman. Bergquist, was charged with fraud, theft and related counts, according to court records and jailed in lieu of $15,000 bail, according to court records. Bateman said the deputy was not hurt.

Columbia man indicted in fatal hit-and-run

A Howard County grand jury has indicted a man in the hit-and-run death of an 82-year-old Columbia woman in November. James Walden Beaman Jr., 53, of the 6300 block of Rainbow Span in Columbia was arrested Wednesday by the Sheriff's Department after being indicted on negligent manslaughter and 10 other counts - including negligent driving and failing to stop his vehicle, leaving the scene where bodily harm had been caused - as a result of the Nov. 24 accident. Ayten Icgoren died the next day at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
