MIKE PRESTON'S REPORT CARD

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Quarterback

D

The best thing you can say about Joe Flacco is he didn't have an interception or a fumble, but at times he looked lost on the field. He was slow picking up and reading blitzes, and he had very little mobility.

Offensive line

C

The Ravens ran at will against the Raiders and found some inside muscle with guards Ben Grubbs and Marshal Yanda and center Matt Birk. The line, though, still needs to coordinate with the running backs about picking up blitzes.

Running backs

A

The Ravens rushed for 240 yards, and backup Willis McGahee played a starring role, gaining 167 yards on 16 carries. Rice had 70 yards on 14 carries. On a day when they had to be great, both McGahee and Rice were.

Receivers

C-

The not-ready-for-prime-time players totaled four receptions for 37 yards. Tight end Todd Heap had two catches for 40 yards, and was open once when Flacco overthrew him.

Defensive line

C+

Tackle Kelly Gregg has become a force in the middle again and finished with six tackles. Tackle/end Trevor Pryce also got good pressure on the QBs. The Ravens stuffed Oakland's run but need to get more pressure up the middle on the pass rush.

Linebackers

B+

Rookie Dannell Ellerbe gets better every week, especially in pass coverage. Antwan Barnes had a sack and several other pressures and has become a factor as a pass rusher. It's nice seeing some of the younger players step up.

Secondary

D

The Ravens played a lot of man coverage, and they couldn't hang with Oakland's receivers. The defensive backs tried to keep everything in front of them, and for the most part, they did that. But that philosophy might have to change some in the playoffs.

Special teams

C

Billy Cundiff missed two field-goal attempts. The Ravens were sloppy on two snaps, one on a field-goal try and one on an extra point. Jalen Parmele averaged 34.5 yards on four kickoff returns, and the Ravens were solid covering kickoffs and punts.
