Hospice of the Chesapeake receives grant from UPS
The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, recently awarded the Hospice of the Chesapeake a $25,000 grant to support the organization's youth programs and services including their bereavement camps for children and teens, Camp Nabi and Phoenix Rising. The foundation is committed to funding programs that make a meaningful difference in supporting children and teens experiencing grief and loss.
Wet season testing begins
The Department of Health's division of environmental health is preparing to start annual wet season site evaluations and percolation tests. Applications for mound sewage disposal systems must be received by Feb. 1. All other applications must be received and scheduled by April 1. At the Anne Arundel County Department of Health:
* Family planning services offer free pregnancy tests, counseling, low-cost exams, lab tests and low-cost birth-control supplies to women younger than 25. Call 410-222-7144 for an appointment.
* WIC supplemental nutrition program provides free nutritious foods, nutrition education, breast-feeding support and resource referrals. To qualify, county residents must meet income guidelines. Call 410-222-6797 or 410-222-0139 (Spanish).
* Free quit-smoking classes and kits are offered to county residents 18 and older. Contact the Learn to Live Line at 410-222-7979 or go to myquitkit.org for additional information.

Diabetes prevention: Baltimore Washington Medical Center will offer classes in diabetes prevention at the Joslin Diabetes Center, 300 Hospital Drive, Suite 119. Classes will be held:
* 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Feb. 3, March 3, April 7, May 5 and June 2.
* 9 a.m to 10 a.m. Feb. 12, April 9 and June 11.
* 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 25, March 22 and May 24.
Classes are recommended for those interested in learning more about how eating healthfully and being more active can affect overall health and wellness. Cost is $25 per class. To register, call the Joslin center at 410-787-4940.

* Baltimore Washington Medical Center will offer free screenings at its Arundel Mills Outreach Center, between Dave and Buster's and mall entrance No. 4 during January:
Tuesday and Jan. 19, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Amedisys Home Health will offer blood pressure screenings.
Jan. 14 and 28, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., podiatrist Jenny Nguyen will offer foot screenings.
* In-school vision and hearing screenings sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Department of Health will be held at the following schools and programs.
