The first baby born in the New Year in the Baltimore region - and one of the first in the nation - arrived mere moments after midnight at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson, according to hospital officials. Olivia Rose Allen, the New Year's baby, was born to Adrienne and Jerry Allen of Churchville, weighing more than 7 pounds and measuring more than 20 inches long. Officials marked the time of delivery at 00:00 on Jan. 1, but a fetal surveillance system tracked the baby's arrival at four seconds after midnight. According to news reports, a baby was born in Arizona two seconds after midnight.

Man injured in 2007 dies, adding to city's '09 homicides

A 56-year-old man who was beaten and stabbed in Southeast Baltimore on Christmas Eve 2007 died of his injuries Wednesday and was added to last year's homicide count, bringing the total number of people killed in 2009 to 238, according to city police. Anthony Metzel, whose exact address was not available, died at a hospice where he had been in a vegitative state since the incident, police said. A man has been convicted in connection with the attack and is serving a 40-year prison sentence. Metzel is the 15th homicide victim to die in 2009 of injuries suffered in previous years, which is about average. The city's 2009 homicide count now stands at 238, four more than last year, 234, which was a 20-year low.
Arundel police investigate death of Glen Burnie woman

Anne Arundel County police are investigating the apparent slaying of a woman found dead in her Glen Burnie apartment Friday afternoon. The victim, Gloria Tongue, 49, of the 400 block of Summer Wind Way, apparently suffered from trauma to the upper body, according to police. Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said a suspect identified as the woman's live-in boyfriend was in custody, and that investigators are treating the case as a domestic incident. Tongue was found by officers who forced their way into her residence. Officers responded to her apartment after Baltimore County police received a call from the suspect's cousin, who said the suspect told him he had killed his girlfriend. Officers detained the suspect at the cousin's residence in Towson. Police did not name the suspect or provide a possible motive, noting that the investigation is continuing.

Three injured in city's first shootings of 2010

In what appeared to be the city's first shootings of the new year, three people were injured in a single incident in Northeast Baltimore early Friday, a police spokesman said. The spokesman, Agent Donny Moses, said the shootings occurred about 3:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of Sheldon Ave. when one gunman walked up to a car and opened fire as the occupants were getting out. A 19-year-old man was wounded in the hip and was treated at a city hospital. A 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were struck several times in their chests and were listed in serious but stable condition at an unidentified hospital. Police did not release their names.
