Terrell Tullis scored six of his seven points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning layup with seven seconds left as the No. 8 Arundel boys basketball team beat host Westlake, 59-58, Saturday in the first round of the Waldorf Holiday Hoops Classic.
The Wildcats (7-0) trailed 17-10 after the first quarter before tying the score at 30 at halftime. Behind R.J. Lewis (11 points), Arundel took a four-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
"It was a defensive battle," Wildcats coach Jeff Starr said. "We played man-to-man, and they played zone. Our shots weren't falling, but we were able to crawl back."
Maurice Mason led the Wolverines (1-3) with 16 points. Arundel faces Frederick Douglass of Prince George's County in Monday's semifinal at 7 p.m.
No. 13 Patterson 57, J.M. Bennett 41: : Aquille Carr scored 17 points to power Patterson past J.M. Bennett at the National High School Coaches Festival at Salisbury University.
The game was close in the first half, with Patterson (5-2) leading by six points at halftime. Thomas Fisher scored six of his 10 points in the third quarter, and Patterson took a 44-30 lead at the end of the period.
Patterson faces Indian Creek (Del.) at noon Monday in the tournament's second round.
