Jamal Barney (Southwestern) scored 28 points and Loyola shot 69.6 percent from the field, as the Greyhounds defeated visiting Howard University, 85-51, in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds (5-5) made 32 of 46 shots from the field for the second-best field-goal percentage in school history. Loyola was 22-for-27 from the field (81.5 percent) in the second half.

Loyola fell just short of the school record for field-goal percentage, set Jan. 21, 1978, when the Greyhounds shot 70.4 percent (31 of 44) against Lehigh.

Barney made 11 of 14 shots, including three of four from 3-point range, to lead all scorers. He also tied for team-high honors with five rebounds and four assists.

Tony Lewis scored 14, on 6-for-7 shooting, off the bench for the Greyhounds, and Brett Harvey added 11.

Mike Phillips led Howard (1-9) with 17 points, while Paul Kirkpatrick scored 10 and had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Bison pulled to within 32-29 on two free throws by Phillips with 18:24 remaining, but Loyola scored 27 of the next 32 points to lead 69-34 on a dunk by Julius Brooks with 9:07 to play.

During the 27-5 run, Loyola made 15 of 17 shots.

The Greyhounds will play a nonconference game Tuesday at Indiana.
