After a 3-pointer by Loyola's Brett Harvey tied the score at 52 with 48.4 seconds remaining in regulation, the Greyhounds' defense buckled down and got the stop it needed to set up the last shot.

However, a shot by Jamal Barney (Southwestern) clanked off the front of the rim as time expired to force overtime.

Coppin State and Loyola were each coming off two consecutive losses.

"We knew from the beginning this was going to be a tough game," Coppin State coach Fang Mitchell said. "There were some mismatches because they are so much bigger than we are. We take a lot of pride in our man-to-man defense. I think our guys through the whole game played tough defensively. We are going to make mistakes, but how hard we played became important."

Lenny Young led the Eagles with 21 points, and Sam Coleman (Mervo) added 16. Barney had 16 points for the Greyhounds, and Harvey had 10.

The Eagles (5-3) don't return home until Jan. 23. The Greyhounds (4-5) host Howard before traveling to Indiana and Bucknell and then continuing with their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule.

In overtime, a 3-pointer by Anthony Winbush and a free throw by Shane Walker gave Loyola a 58-56 lead with 2:05 left.

The Eagles answered with a pair of free throws by Branden Doughty, and a layup by Vince Goldsberry gave them a 62-58 lead in the final minute. Goldsberry iced the game with a free throw with 12.8 seconds left.
