Emily Berman, Towson

Berman took a team that had few stars and made it jell very quickly. The surprising Generals overcame a lack of height to go undefeated in Baltimore County and advance to the state semifinals. There, the Generals (17-1) pushed then-No. 1 River Hill to a fifth game before coming up short.

Berman emphasizes a defensive style, and the Generals were disciplined and rarely out of position. She stressed to her players the importance of being mentally ready to play.

A 2003 Towson graduate, Berman has compiled a 34-3 record in her two years with the Generals. In addition to the run to the state tournament this year, her 2008 team lost in the Class 3A final to Centennial.

Berman played volleyball for UMBC and was on Towson's last state championship team in 2001, when the Generals won the Class 2A title.
