Elderly man dies in fire at Parkville apartment

An elderly Parkville man died in an apartment fire Sunday morning, the Baltimore County Fire Department said. Officials withheld the victim's name, pending family notification. According to investigators, fire dispatchers received a call at 10:54 a.m. reporting the smell of smoke at 8401 Nunley Dr., in the Ridge Garden Apartment complex. Firefighters from the Parkville Fire Station found the victim, who was in his 90s, dead in his kitchen and surrounded by smoke, but very little fire. Officials said the fire was likely "cooking-related."

Two treated for exposure to carbon monoxide

Two Severn-area residents were hospitalized Saturday with elevated levels of carbon monoxide in their bloodstreams, the apparent result of improperly using a gas stove to heat their home, said Matthew Tobia, battalion chief of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. Officials responded to the 1800 block of Graybird Court to investigate a "carbon monoxide incident" reported about 7:30 p.m. and found a 6-year-old girl and a 39-year-old woman "suffering from the effects of possible" exposure, Tobia said. The victims were transported to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police identify pedestrian killed by tanker truck

Maryland State Police on Sunday identified the pedestrian killed this weekend after stepping into the path of an Exxon tanker truck as 57-year-old Joseph Mark Scannell, of the 7500 block of Moyer Ave. in Parkville. Scannell died Saturday morning at the accident scene, at Harford Road and Interstate 695. Alcohol was not a factor, according to a corporal from the Golden Ring Barracks.

West Baltimore youth charged in liquor store stick-up

A 16-year-old West Baltimore youth has been charged as an adult in the holdup of a Hampden liquor store Friday night in which an off-duty police officer shot another robber, a city police spokeswoman said Sunday. Karim Abdul of the 4700 block Wakefield Road faces charges of attempted armed robbery and other crimes related to the stick-up in the 3700 block Falls Road, said police spokeswoman Nicole Monroe. The other suspect, whose name police would not release because he has not been charged, was in critical condition at Sinai Hospital. He was shot by an off-duty Northwest District officer.
