A Harford County restaurant manager is continuing his efforts to assist families coping with childhood cancer by holding a superhero event in Bel Air on Saturday.
The Dominator, a character inspired by one child's battle with a brain tumor, will take part in an ice cream social and fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. at Moore's Candies at 138 N. Bond St. Children will receive a free scoop of ice cream and visit with the red-suited superhero. Members of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company will be on hand at 3:30 p.m. with their mascot and several giveaways.
"We are doing this for all the families affected by children with cancer during the holidays," said Dave Anderson, manager of Buontempo's on Main Street.
The restaurant is donating a portion of its proceeds Saturday to the effort.
Anderson published 2,000 copies of the Dominator comic book, which is based on the story of Dominic Osorio, a 7-year-old boy whose mother devised the superhero story and gave him the lead role of the Dominator. When Dominic went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, his mother told him to think of himself as the Dominator, waging war with an evil enemy that he called a megazoid. Dominic died last month, but Anderson has vowed to continue his legacy.
"We have mailed comic books all over the country and are working on a second book," Anderson said. "It is remarkable how this one child's story has escalated and how he continues to help kids everywhere."
