THE BALTIMORE SUN

It began as freezing sleet, then turned to snow in what is still the heaviest Thanksgiving snowstorm ever in Baltimore. It was 1938, and hundreds of men were dispatched to sand, sweep and plow. They salted the trolley switches to keep them working as snow deepened to 10 inches. Planes were grounded at Baltimore's Logan Field in Dundalk. Motorists abandoned their "machines" as windshields iced up.
