Blood donations

The Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region of the American Red Cross is requesting blood donations. Eligible donors can call 800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule an appointment. Platelet donors should call 800-272-2123.


Howard County General Hospital will feature the following community education programs. Space is limited, registration is required. Unless otherwise noted, all programs will be held at the HCGH Wellness Center's Medical Pavilion, 10710 Charter Drive, Suite 100, Columbia. * Baby signing. Teach your baby how to communicate with 100 basic signs. Babies up to 12 months old are welcome. Cost is $40 per person $75 per couple. Class is 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 5.

* Pre-diabetes. Learn what pre-diabetes is and how to make lifestyle changes to prevent or delay the onset of actual diabetes. Cost $15. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 9.

* Adult, child and infant CPR course. Earn a two-year heart-saver certification card upon completion of the class, which is not intended for health-care providers. Cost is $48. 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 10.

Clinical trial: An herbal research clinical trial of the effects of culinary herbs on brain function will be studied at Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, Laurel, now through January. Participants must be between the ages of 65 and 90 and nonsmokers in a stable state of general health. Volunteers will consume a tomato drink containing a randomly assigned amount of the herbs being investigated and complete computer-based tests and questionnaires. Care for the caregiver : Explore emotions and issues about grief and guilt and the joys and satisfactions connected with personal caregiving at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, 1525 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 16. Senior yoga : Classes will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays at Slayton House in the Village of Wilde Lake. Sign up for a full session or drop in. Classes are slower-paced and emphasize breathing and stress reduction. Limited space; preregistration recommended. This program is sponsored by the Wilde Lake Community Association. Support groups

Parkinson's : Howard County General Hospital's Parkinson's disease support group will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Dec. 8 and the second Tuesday of each month in the hospital's Bolduc Family Outpatient Center, 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia. Designed for patients diagnosed with the disease and their families and caregivers, the group discusses speech and swallowing, voice therapy, nutrition and exercise. NAMI : The National Alliance on Mental Illness sponsors a family support group at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 and the second Tuesday of each month in the day room at Harmony Hall Retirement Community, 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia; and Dec. 21 and the fourth Monday of each month at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Room 3, 10751 Scaggsville Road, Laurel.
