The No. 17 Oklahoma men's basketball pulled away from Mount St. Mary's in the second half to earn a 95-71 victory in the season opener for both teams. Senior Jeremy Goode posted a team-high 18 points for the Mount in the loss.
Trailing 49-36 at the half, the Mount scored the first eight points of the second half to get back into the game. Mount St. Mary's sustained the run, cutting the lead to 55-50 with 14:47 left after a pair of free throws by Goode. Oklahoma countered with eight straight points, all at the free-throw line, to take control.
Goode had 18 points and four assists for the Mount while Jean Cajou added 13 points. Kelly Beidler added 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals while Shawn Atupem had 10 points and six boards for the Mount.
Oklahoma was paced by Steven Pledger's 21 points off the bench. Pledger hit eight of nine from the field including four of five from three-point range in 19 minutes for the Sooners. Heralded freshman Tiny Gallon added 18 points and 15 rebounds in the win while All-America candidate Willie Warren added 15 points and 11 assists.
Brown scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half and the Eagles made 11 of 14 free throws in the second period to hold off West Virginia Tech.
Mount St. Mary's 55, Canisius 51: : Sandra Andresson and Courtney Nyce sparked a 13-5 run in the final four minutes to lead the Mount (1-0) past the visiting Golden Griffins (0-1) in the season opener for both teams.
With the game tied at 50, Andresson scored on a driving layup to give the Mount the lead for good with 2:36 remaining. UNC-Greensboro 85, Morgan State 68: : Corin Adams, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason Player of the Year, scored a game-high 31 points in a losing effort for the visiting Bears (0-1).
UNC Greensboro had four players in double digits with Amanda Leigh (18 points), Kendra Smith (14) and Agne Girstautaite (12) all recording career highs.
Coppin State 57, St. Augustine's 41: : Shante Cummings scored 15 points to lead the host Eagles (2-0) past the Lady Falcons (0-1) in an exhibition game.
Keyona Bryant had a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds for St. Augustine's, which shot 33 percent from the floor.
Coppin State built a 35-16 lead at the half shooting 43.3 percent.
