Playing short, Washington scores five in 3rd, wins, 7-4

Tomas Fleischmann scored twice during Washington's five-goal third period, and the short-handed Capitals beat the visiting Florida Panthers, 7-4, Saturday night for a sweep of their home-and-home series. Washington played a third straight game without two-time NHL Most Valuable Player Alex Ovechkin, who has an upper body injury. The Capitals were also without injured defensemen Mike Green and Jeff Schultz, both of whom were hurt in a 4-1 win Friday night.


UMBC men reach semifinals; Hopkins men win Centennial

Junior midfielder Levi Houapeu scored in the 72nd minute to break a tie and give UMBC (13-5-0) a 2-1 win over host Binghamton (9-9-1) in the America East quarterfinals. The fifth-seeded Retrievers advance to the semifinals, where they will play at regular-season champion and top-seeded New Hampshire at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Houapeu assisted on freshman midfielder Mark Lubetkin's first career goal in the first minute of the second half for a 1-0 lead, but Binghamton's Jake Keegan tied the game a minute later.

More men's soccer: : Johns Hopkins (15-3-2) rallied to a 2-1 victory over Dickinson (14-4-2) in Allentown, Pa., to claim its eighth Centennial Conference championship. ... York (15-1-4) held off a rally by visiting Stevenson (12-9) to win, 2-1, in the Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer final. Kyle Baker (Bowie) scored in the 87th minute to pull the Mustangs within a goal.

Women's soccer: : Mary Washington's Sarah Tryon scored the tying goal with 1:43 remaining in regulation and the Eagles (12-4-5) won a shootout to defeat host Stevenson (14-3-2) and capture the CAC championship. ... Senior Caitlin Moore scored two goals as 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins (15-3-0) earned a 3-0 win over Haverford (12-3-3) in the Centennial Conference semifinals at Muhlenberg. ... Frostburg State (18-3) is headed to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2005 after earning a 1-0 overtime win against visiting Penn State Altoona (17-4) in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title game.

Field hockey: : Johns Hopkins (13-5) scored all its goals in the second half and off Gettysburg (14-5) to win, 4-3, in the Centennial Conference semifinals at Ursinus. ... Michelle Rowe broke a tie by scoring her first goal of the season with just under six minutes remaining, helping second-ranked Salisbury (16-1, 6-0) capture its 15th consecutive CAC title with a 2-1 victory over Mary Washington (12-8, 4-2).

Men's basketball: : Virginia sophomore center Assane Sene has been suspended from the team's first three games for conduct detrimental to the team. The 7-foot Senegal native started in 16 of the 22 games he played in last season.
