Johnny Duarte hopes to be a professional bass fisherman when he grows up.
The Middle River youngster notched his first victory Oct. 31, winning his age group in the 2009 Junior Bassmaster World Championship on Florida's Lake Yale East.
During pre-tournament practice, Johnny said he tempted lots of bass with a frog lure. But when the contest began, the sun disappeared behind clouds and the bite shut off. Luckily, the young angler kept working his spots.
"I tried flipping a beaver-type bait and caught one bass," he told reporters afterward. "Later, when the sun came out a little more, I was able to get them to bite a frog. I caught three of my keepers on a frog."
Johnny said on the last cast of the day, he lost a 2-pounder when he didn't get a good hook set. His four-fish bag weighed exactly 5 pounds, good enough to lead the 11- to 14-year-old division.
The young angler also took fifth place in the 2009 Bassmaster CastingKids Championship.
