Student commissioner

The Anne Arundel County Commission for Women has selected Rachel Roth, a junior at Southern High School, as the organization's new student associate commissioner.

She will serve a two-year term beginning in September, which includes participating in commission activities, attending monthly meetings and completing a project of value to women and families in Anne Arundel County.

Her interests are in ballet, theater and the fine and visual arts. She participates in musicals, plays and the art program at her school, and is involved in the county-wide Gifted and Talented Art Program. She is also an active member at Grace Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Davidsonville.

Boating safety course

Course and test to be held 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday will cover guidelines of law to operate a boat in Maryland waters. Ages 10 to adult. Cost is $25 per person. Register with the Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department by calling 410-263-7958 or go to

Camp masterpiece

Artists will give classes from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Chesapeake Children's Museum, 25 Silopanna Road in Annapolis. Included will be the discussion and application of two-point perspective, vanishing points, horizon lines, eye-level lines, shadows and highlights, and learning how to draw from observation and imagination. German-style music

The Old Stein Inn offers musical entertainment from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays at the Biergarten/Bierstube Restaurant, 1143 Central Ave. East in Edgewater. Performers include Heidi and the Heimat Echo on Saturday, and the Magic Mountain Trio on July 25. Information: 410-798-6807.

Rowing classes

The Annapolis Rowing Club is offering Learn to Row classes in sweep rowing in eight-person shells with coxswains. Experienced club members teach rowing fundamentals and safety procedures. Equipment includes shells for eight and four rowers and coxswains, as well as sculling boats for one to four rowers. Those who complete the course will be eligible to participate in the club's novice rowing program beginning July 20.

Classes will be held from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the St. John's College boathouse and on College Creek, Saturday and July 19. The cost is $170. Classes are geared for those with no rowing experience. Participants must be 13 or older.

The Banneker-Douglass Museum, 84 Franklin St. in Annapolis, is operating on its summer schedule. Hours remain in effect through Sept. 6:

Musical auditions

The Pasadena Theatre Company will hold auditions for the fall musical production of Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up, based on a novel by John R. Powers. Auditions will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. July 20 at the Abundant Life Church, 7305 E. Furnace Branch Road in Glen Burnie. Historic house tours

The Ann Arrundell County Historical Society has opened the historic Benson-Hammond House and North Browse and Buy Shoppe at Aviation Boulevard and Andover Road in Linthicum for the season.

Tours are offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. Group tours are given by appointment.

The house and outbuildings interpret the agricultural heritage of northern Anne Arundel County.
