Presented by the Anne Arundel County Department of Health's Learn to Live program, the newsletter Building Blocks discusses ADHD in young children and provides tips and resources to help child care providers and parents.
Free copies of HIM (Health Ideas for Men) magazine are available at the Department of Health, J. Howard Beard Health Services Building, 3 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis. The magazine features articles on exercises that encourage fitness, eating healthy while dining out, quitting smoking and preventing skin cancer. HIM can also be requested by calling the Learn To Live Line, 410-222-7979, or go to LearnToLiveHealthy.org.
Tips can be found on the Anne Arundel County Department of Health's Web site at aahealth.org. Select "Hot Topics." The site features hot weather tips, sun and water safety, information on Lyme disease and recommendations for reducing the risk of food-borne illnesses for picnics, barbecues and other outdoor activities.
Cancer prevention kit
The Anne Arundel County Department of Health's Learn to Live program offers a free kit. It can be ordered from the Learn to Live line, 410-222-7979, or at LearnToLiveHealthy.org
The kit contains information on how the disease can be detected and treated and how lifestyle changes can help prevent the disease. The kit also provides information on LifeScreen, a program that offers free colorectal cancer screenings to eligible county residents.
Senior services directory
The free 2009-2010 edition of Services for Seniors, Adults With Disabilities and Caregivers is available at the Heritage Office Complex, 2666 Riva Road, fourth floor, Annapolis, and the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities' seven senior activity centers, county public libraries and Giant Food stores. The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is accepting partnership and sponsorship opportunities to businesses and other private sector agencies.
Opportunities include the Family Caregiver workshop series, the annual Caregivers' Wellness Day, the annual caregivers' conference, the Planning for the Future workshop series and sponsorships for publications and various products.
Sponsorship categories start at $500. To obtain a sponsor agreement form, call 410-222-4257, ext. 3051. The department does not endorse any particular vendor or business and has the right to approve or reject potential sponsors.
Kids' club for wellness
Arundel Mills will offer children the Simon Kidgits Club.
The Simon Kidgits Club for children ages 3 to 8 focuses on health, wellness, education, safety and entertainment. Parents can sign their children up during mall hours. Membership is $5 annually or $8 for two years and includes a membership card, T-shirt, scheduled activities, a birthday card and gift certificate, discounts and newsletter.
New senior nutrition location : In cooperation with the South County Faith Network, the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities opened a new senior site at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River. The center opens 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays with a lunchtime meal, games, activities and day trips. For those ages 55 to 59, the meal is $4.22; those 60 and older eat free. Reservations for the meal must be made the Tuesday before the Friday session. Call 410-222-4464, ext. 3007 for reservations.
