Baloga three strokes ahead at Md. Amateur Stroke Play

Defending champion Chris Baloga blistered the Mount Pleasant Golf Course layout for a 5-under-par 66, good for a 36-hole total of 138, and took a three-stroke lead in the 42nd Maryland Amateur Stroke Play championship Saturday. Perennial contender Phil Fairbanks of Hobbit's Glen GC in Columbia followed at 70-71-141, trailed by John Moheyer, 71-71-142. John Howson, one of three at 143, was the low Senior. The original field of 117 was pared to 61 players at 155 and better who will play the final round today, beginning at 7 a.m.

Moreno's goal in 59th minute gives Crew 1-1 tie with United

Alejandro Moreno scored the tying goal in the 59th minute and the host Columbus Crew pushed its home unbeaten streak to 17 games with a 1-1 draw with D.C. United in Major League Soccer. Christian Gomez scored his fourth goal in the 33rd minute to give United (5-3-9) the lead, but the Crew (5-3-8) rallied despite being outshot 22-9. Columbus' 11-0-6 run at Crew Stadium is one game shy of tying the MLS record for home unbeaten streaks.

Crystal Palace Baltimore: : Striker Brandon Swartzendruber scored twice in the final minutes as a substitute to lift the host Harrisburg City Islanders over his former team, 3-1, in United Soccer Leagues Second Division action Friday night. Palace took a 1-0 lead on rookie Jordan Seabrook's goal at 25 minutes, but Harrisburg tied it four minutes later on a deflection. The two teams meet again at 7:30 p.m. Friday at UMBC Stadium.

Reading eliminates Mariners in first round of AIFA playoffs

The Mariners' hopes of a championship ended with a 50-20 first-round playoff loss to the host Reading Express on Thursday night. Reading quarterback Rob Flowers completed 20 of 33 passes for 262 yards and five touchdowns, and he added a rushing touchdown. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth was 8-for-23 for 115 yards and two late touchdown passes. The Mariners completed their second season in the American Indoor Football Association at 9-6 after going 4-10 the previous season.
