Hagerstown man gets 50 years in bank robberies
A Hagerstown man was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison Friday for armed bank robberies, the Maryland U.S. attorney's office announced. The sentence was enhanced based on three previous convictions for violent felonies. David Wilberton Shanton, 54, was convicted in March after a four-day trial. Evidence presented showed that he stole nearly $34,000 from an M&T; Bank in Hagerstown in October 2007, fired a shotgun at a police vehicle, then stole a handgun and held a mother and her daughter hostage at gunpoint for hours while he made his getaway. In November 2007, he used the stolen gun in an attempt to rob a Susquehanna Bank in Hagerstown.
