Body found in harbor

A man on a docked boat discovered the body of a man floating under a pier in the 700 block of Eastern Ave. at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Baltimore police. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy, but there were no signs of trauma, said Agent Donny Moses, a Baltimore police spokesman. Four other bodies have surfaced in the city's waterways this year. As of April 1, none of those deaths had been declared homicides.

Woman burned in fire at Baltimore nail salon

A woman who was getting her acrylic nail tips removed at a Baltimore salon was seriously burned Saturday when a machine caught fire, city fire officials said.

The woman, whose name and age were not yet released by authorities, was burned on about 40 percent of her body and was taken by ambulance to the Burn Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center about 6 p.m., said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a spokesman for the Baltimore Fire Department.

The incident occurred at the Nail Studio in the 5400 block of Reisterstown Road and left the woman with burns on her face, neck, hands, belly and legs, he said. Terry Nguyen, 17, nail artist at the salon, said the victim is a frequent customer who was soaking her nails in a heated bowl of acetone when "she just caught fire." The bowl was plugged into an electrical outlet, she said.

"She was screaming," said Nguyen, who said the woman was there with her school-aged goddaughter who appeared to be 6 or 7 years old. A customer called 911 while employees tried to extinguish the fire.

Cartwright said fire investigators had not determined what caused the fire or whether there was any wrongdoing on the part of the salon, but he noted that acetone is highly flammable.

Crash victim was Morgan student

Baltimore police have identified a passenger who was killed Friday evening in a car crash on Northern Parkway at McClean Boulevard. Morgan State University student Brendon Figaro, 28, of San Fernando, Trinidad, was riding in the front passenger seat of a 2001 Toyota Corolla about 6:30 p.m. Friday, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman. The Corolla driver attempted to make a left turn from eastbound Northern Parkway onto McClean when the car was struck by a westbound 2000 Jeep Cherokee, Moses said. The driver of the Corolla was taken to Sinai Hospital in serious condition; the driver and a passenger in the Jeep also were taken to area hospitals. Moses said that no charges had been filed, but based on preliminary investigation, it appears the driver of the Corolla was at fault for failing to yield.
