Boys Performer of the Year

Graham Bazell, Atholton

Perhaps the best distance runner in the state, the senior swept the 1,600 and 3,200 at the Howard County and regional meets. He then took the 1,600 at the Class 3A state meet before teammate Michael Lynch beat him in the 3,200. Bazell has found consistency this year that he didn't have before, and that's bad news for his opponents this season outdoors.

Coaches of the Year

Phil Rogers and Rita Williams, Reservoir

Rogers and Williams did a fine job of taking inexperienced track athletes and turning them into accomplished ones. Reservoir is still building, but it took second in the county, just two points behind Atholton. After that came a third-place finish in the Class 3A East regional meet and a seventh-place spot in the state.

Girls Performer of the Year

Katie Harman, River Hill

The senior ended the cross country season on a roll and finally healthy, and that carried over into the indoor season. Harman again came up big in the crucial meets, helping the Hawks to county and regional titles before finishing a close second in the Class 2A state meet. She swept the 1,600 and 3,200 at the Howard County title meet and then again at the Central regional meet. Harman then took the 3,200 at the state meet and took third in the 1,600.

Coach of the Year

Earl Lauer, River Hill

The Hawks had a good group of athletes, led by Harman, and Lauer preached that any points are good points. Versatility is one of the main reasons they won the county and Class 2A Central regional titles before coming in second at the state meet, eight points behind Middletown. The Hawks were strong in distance events, and their best runners would help in relays. River Hill got points in the field events, as well.
