Jazz stars from around the world, including Dianne Reeves and Kyle Eastwood, son of Clint, will gather this week for the 10th annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival. The event, Friday and Saturday, will feature musicians on five stages as well as workshops and classes for budding artists. You can see the list of activities at www.capetownjazzfest.com. Here are five other things to do:
Hike Table Mountain : If you're feeling energetic, hike to the top of this plateau that rises 3,566 feet above sea level. Or, if you prefer, ride a cable car to the top. Either way, once you're there, the views are spectacular.
Remember Robben Island : Used as a prison by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, Robben Island in modern times held apartheid resisters, including Nelson Mandela. Today it is a monument to the country's struggle for democracy.
Sip the wine: Take a tour or drive through South Africa's famed wine-producing regions of Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl, less than an hour's drive from Cape Town.
Go on safari : Several Cape Town tour operators offer excursions to nearby game preserves, where you can see elephants, buffaloes, lions and other big game.
Relax on the harbor : The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is in the heart of Cape Town's shopping and entertainment district. It offers fine dining, street-corner musicians and nightlife.
