Coach, 52, charged in porn-firearm case

A Baltimore County man who coaches field hockey at Towson University has been charged with having child pornography and a firearm accessible to a minor, police said yesterday.

John Joseph Kovach Jr., 52, of the 14100 block of Longnecker Road in the Reisterstown area was arrested Wednesday after an investigation by county detectives revealed he had pornography of "young, nude female children," as well as a handgun to which a minor living in his home could gain access, police said in a news release.

Kovach, who works at a Montessori school in Montgomery County and is an assistant field hockey coach at Towson, told authorities he used home and school computers to look at images and "sexually exploit children through the Internet," police said. A Feb. 27 online conversation with a retired Los Angeles police detective, who was posing as a 13-year-old girl, led to the investigation of Kovach, police said.

Kovach started a field hockey program at the Montessori school in Ashton about a decade ago. Towson has suspended him without pay and denied him access to the campus, according to a news release from the university, where he began working as a volunteer coach in September 2003 before being hired full-time in July 2007.

The university said preliminary information appears to indicate none of the incidents occurred on the campus.
