The large, sage-colored house on a quiet corner in Annapolis' Murray Hill neighborhood began in 1930 as a cozy cottage. Many years later, JoLynn and Robert Sheehan decided that an addition would give their growing family a main-level great room for gathering and a little more privacy upstairs.
"We actually added the addition for the kids when they got bigger," JoLynn Sheehan said, noting that she and her husband wanted to provide a spacious area for their daughters to hang out at home with friends.
It's been a party area, a family-and-friends gathering spot, a dining area and an all-purpose room where the family can unwind in front of the fire or television. Crystal ceiling lights on dimmers give the great room a sparkling atmosphere in an instant, and the room has become a focal point for many events.
"We had a graduation party, and a 50th anniversary party for Bob's parents," JoLynn Sheehan said.
Now, with their daughters beginning to leave the nest, the couple are considering a smaller home.
About the house The Sheehans have lived in the house for two decades. It has four finished levels, five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and a first-floor powder room. Custom plantation shutters and hardwood floors unify new and old on the first floor.
While doing the addition three years ago, the couple renovated part of the house. They didn't change the living room, where sunlight streams in, but they did make over and enlarge the kitchen, which takes the place of the former kitchen and dining room. The new room features granite countertops and a long island that seats six. The Sheehans also upgraded to stainless-steel appliances while keeping the original cherry cabinets.
Open to the kitchen, the new great room is two steps down, giving the room 9-foot ceilings. The wood-burning brick fireplace features a black marble hearth. The family uses part of the room as a dining room, the rest for relaxing. French doors open onto a mahogany deck and the backyard.
