Donnie Murphy, brought in on a minor league deal to compete for a utility spot on the Opening Day roster, certainly made good on his one opportunity. A substitute at third base for Ty Wigginton, Murphy broke a 3-3 seventh-inning tie with a two-run homer to right field against Red Sox right-hander Adam Mills. An inning earlier, Red Sox shortstop Ivan Ochoa had tied the game with a two-run homer off Orioles left-hander Chris Waters.

Two sparkling plays in the fifth inning allowed Orioles reliever Chris Ray to turn in a quick and scoreless inning. Center fielder Justin Christian made a diving catch on Boston outfielder Chris Carter's drive to left-center. Brad Wilkerson followed with a hard grounder that sent second baseman Brian Roberts sprinting to his left to make a diving stop. He then threw out Wilkerson from his knees.
Originally scheduled to be off today, the Orioles will instead play a seven-inning intrasquad game at Fort Lauderdale Stadium to give some pitchers work. Danys Baez, Hayden Penn, George Sherrill, Jamie Walker, Jake Arrieta, Dennis Sarfate, Kam Mickolio, Jim Hoey and Fredy Deza are scheduled to pitch.
