THE USUAL SUSPECTS
A couple of weeks into spring training, Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff already appear to be in midseason form. The pair combined to go 5-for-6 with three doubles and three RBIs. Huff had all three of the RBIs with a first-inning single off Marlins right-hander Ricky Nolasco and a third-inning two-run double off Nolasco. Markakis, who had two doubles, scored on each of those hits.
MATUSZ LOOKS GOOD
Brian Matusz, the left-hander who was the fourth overall pick in last year's draft, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut. He allowed just a hit and a walk, again impressing manager Dave Trembley with his poise and ability to hold runners. He allowed the leadoff man to reach in both of his innings before getting out of them unscathed. Matusz struck out three Marlins.
Left-hander Rich Hill will make his first Orioles start at 1:05 p.m. today against the Washington Nationals in Viera, Fla. David Pauley, Troy Patton, Chris Tillman, David Hernandez and Bob McCrory are also scheduled to pitch. Left-hander Scott Olsen, whom the Nationals acquired from the Marlins this offseason, will start for the home team. Tyler Clippard, Terrell Young, Saul Rivera and Jesus Colome are also expected to pitch for the Nationals.
