Missing 'Madea'

I'm used tothe latest slasher film arriving in theaters without being screened for critics. But when ambitious moviemakers reach a plateau of success, they usually insist that their work be reviewed. Not so for Tyler Perry's movies, including today's Madea Goes to Jail. Entertainment Weekly ranked him No. 8 on its 2007 list of "the 50 Smartest People in Hollywood." Yet one Perry movie after another opens "cold," and that's not a smart move. Only if a filmmaker leaves himself open for criticism can he get what he wants: the possibility of good advance press.
