School therapist charged with molesting boy, 13

A therapist who worked at Booker T. Washington Middle School in Baltimore was arrested in Catonsville and charged with molesting a 13-year-old boy, Baltimore County police said yesterday.

Robert J. Stoever, 54, of the 1500 block of Park Ave. was arrested Sunday night after a county police officer saw him and the boy in a car in a parking lot at Edmondson Avenue and Academy Road, said Cpl. Michael Hill, a police spokesman.

Stoever was charged with a second-degree sex offense and perverted practice, according to court documents. He was sent to the Baltimore County Detention Center, Hill said.

Stoever was not employed by the school system but worked for an outside vendor that provides therapy services, said Edie House, a schools spokeswoman. He had been at the school since September 2007 and has been fired, she said. She would not identify the vendor.

Principal William C. Bailey sent a letter to parents yesterday telling them of the arrest and urging anyone with "information regarding any incident of this nature" to contact school officials. "I want to assure you that the school community is doing everything possible to provide your child with a safe and healthy environment that supports teaching and learning," he said.

It could not be determined whether the boy Stoever is accused of molesting was a student at the school.

An article in yesterday's editions about the arrest of a school therapist on molestation charges incorrectly stated his employment status with an outside vendor that sent him to work at Booker T. Washington Middle School in Baltimore. A school system spokeswoman confirmed that the therapist, Robert J. Stoever, is no longer working at the school but declined to comment further.THE SUN REGRETS THE ERRORS
