'Roots of Howard County' explores race in politics

The Columbia Association, African Art Museum of Maryland, the Howard County Center of African-American Culture and Columbia's villages will sponsor "Roots of Howard County" in celebration of African-American history from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia.

The theme for the fourth annual event is "African-Americans in Politics." The African Art Museum of Maryland, housed at Historic Oakland, will feature Kenyan artifacts in honor of President Barack Obama, who is of Kenyan descent.

Teen Role Model contest set

The second annual Teen Role Model Competition will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 22 at Kahler Hall in the Harper's Choice Village Center, Columbia.

Howard County students, age 12 to 18 are invited to participate. Teens will compete in evening wear and high-fashion modeling and answer questions about issues of concern to teens. Contestants will be judged on their ability to be role models for children.
