The Howard County Library will hold its 12th gala fundraiser, "Evening in the Stacks: Along the Silk Road," from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Feb. 28 at the east Columbia branch library, 6600 Cradlerock Way.
Manil Suri, author of The Death of Vishnu and The Age of Shiva, will speak. An auction, belly dancing and other entertainment, and a 50/50 raffle are planned.
Tickets are $100, available online ( www.hclibrary.org) and at library branches. Proceeds will benefit the library's educational initiatives, including Dogs Education and Assisting Readers, Teen Time, Cultural Connections and Kindergarten Here We Come! classes.
Church blood drive
A blood drive, sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way.

Evening of ballet
The Ballet Royale Institute of Maryland, 9147-D Red Branch Road, will offer "Ballerina Brillante! An Evening of Classical Dance" at 7 Feb. 28. Dancers of all ages will perform excerpts from Paquita, Swan Lake and other traditional and original works.
Admission is free but donations to the Ballet Royale company's scholarship fund will be accepted.

Preschool classes : The east Columbia branch library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer preschool classes focused on creative expression, social skills, listening comprehension and building a foundation for reading through recognizing letters and numbers, and learning vocabulary.

"3, 2, Fun!" for ages 2 to 3 with an adult, will be offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mondays, through Feb. 23. Space is limited; tickets are available at the Children's Desk 30 minutes before the class.
