Mount Airy mayor stepping down

Mount Airy Mayor Frank Johnson says he's stepping down to focus on his day job. Johnson said Monday that his intergovernmental relations duties for Carroll County had grown and he could no longer devote enough time to his work as mayor. Johnson says town council President David Pyatt will become acting mayor. However, Johnson said he didn't know whether Pyatt, who is on vacation until later this month, had received the voicemail Johnson left him about the change. Under terms of the town charter, Pyatt will serve as mayor and council president for the remainder of the mayor's term, which expires in May. While serving in both positions, Pyatt will retain his vote on the town council.

Man, woman indicted in sex trafficking

A Montgomery County man and woman have been indicted on a charge of prostituting young girls in Gaithersburg and Washington. Federal prosecutors say indictments against 26-year-old Lloyd Royal of Fort George and 26-year-old Angela Bentolila of Potomac were unsealed yesterday. U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein says the two created a sex-trafficking scheme where three girls were drugged using cocaine, PCP, and marijuana or alcohol before having sex in Montgomery County or the District of Columbia. Prosecutors say Royal and Bentolila also forced the girls to sell cocaine from April to May 2007. Authorities say Royal also forced the girls to have sex with him. Bentolila is said to have allowed her home and car to be used for sex with two of the girls. Initial appearances were scheduled Tuesday afternoon. It was not clear whether the two have attorneys.
