I spy 'Chuck' in 3-D

The Baltimore Sun

It's not a trend; it's a marketing campaign. I'm talking about the sudden appearance of 3-D productions on TV.

Those who watched the Super Bowl yesterday saw 3-D ads for the DreamWorks film Monsters vs. Aliens and SoBe Lifewater (this one included the dancing Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis).

And tonight comes a new episode of the NBC series Chuck in 3-D, "Chuck Versus the Third Dimension." The three productions are part of a marketing campaign by NBC, DreamWorks Animation and PepsiCo's SoBe Lifewater. I admit I was never a fan of 3-D, but wearing the glasses while watching Chuck made the screen seem very dark without providing any real depth. After about 10 minutes, I took off the glasses and enjoyed the episode a lot more.

Tonight's premise: Chuck (Zachary Levi) is having dreams about Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and getting no sleep. Everyone, including the gorgeous Sarah, tells him he needs a night off.

So, he takes one and finds himself hip-deep in an assassination attempt on the life of a rock star (Dominic Monaghan from Lost). What ensues is anything but a night off. (8 p.m., WBAL-Channel 11) **

Late-Night Guests: Actor Steve Martin visits Late Show with David Letterman. Akon performs on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
