NOTORIOUS : *** The way the disarmingly deft young actor Jamal Woolard portrays hip-hop star Notorious B.I.G., he knows he's giving voice to a street reality heavily tinged with macho hyperbole and fantasy. Woolard's skill and self-awareness - and the promise of redemption he helps build into Notorious B.I.G.'s story - helps nonfans enter a biopic marked by reprehensible behavior amid nonstop creativity. You don't have to love hip-hop to have a crackling good time at this movie.
