Schools close early for semester exams

Anne Arundel County public schools will give high school semester exams tomorrow. Schools will close two hours early for all students for teacher workdays. There will be no afternoon kindergarten or ECI.

Schools will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday for students but open for in-service/workday for elementary and middle school teachers and workday for high school teachers.

Public budget workshop

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education will hold a public workshop on fiscal 2010 operating and capital budgets.

The workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom of the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.

No public testimony will be taken at the workshop.

The board is scheduled to adopt the budget Feb. 18. It will then be forwarded to the county executive as part of the county budget.

The school board will then reconcile its budget with the county proposed budget at its June 17 meeting.

Charity basketball games

The boys and girls basketball teams at South River and Southern high schools will play games Friday to help raise money for "Think Pink" breast cancer awareness.

Players from the four teams will collect pledges for the number of points their team scores in their games. South River will donate its pledges to the Griffin Strong Foundation in honor of a parent of four children who have been or will be students there. Southern High will donate its pledges to the same organization in memory of longtime social studies teacher Lynn Rabik, who died in November.

The girls game begins at 5 p.m., and the boys game at 6:45 p.m. at South River High, 201 Central Ave. East, Edgewater.

Public opinion meetings

The School Board Nominating Commission of Anne Arundel County will hold district field hearings to solicit the public's opinion on education issues facing their specific district, the commission's process and procedures, and qualifications for a successful Board of Education candidate.

Meetings will be held as follows: 7 p.m. Wednesday (District 30), Annapolis High School; February (District 32), details to be announced; 7 p.m. March 16 (District 33), Arundel High School; April (District 31), TBA; May (District 21), TBA.

The commission also is accepting applications for the Anne Arundel County Board of Education at-large seat that will be open July 1. Application deadline is April 1.

Information kiosk at mall

The Anne Arundel County public schools Office of School and Family Partnerships staff will have a kiosk in Arundel Mills mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to provide parents and students with information about the school system's program offerings and opportunities.

School employees will distribute information and answer questions near the food court. Parents can learn how they can become more involved in their child's education, as well as get details on AACPS programs such as "Parent Workshops to Go" and parent involvement conferences.

Information will be available on the school system's magnet programs, AVID, Title I, special education and other programs. Bilingual interpreters will be available to assist Spanish-speaking families.

Students from school robotics clubs will do demonstrations.

Hourly drawings will be held for backpacks filled with school supplies, and the first 500 visitors will receive free gifts.
