Program to teach child empowerment

The Marriotts Ridge High School PTSA will sponsor a presentation for parents by Peter Spevak, co-author with Maryann Karinch of Empowering Underachievers: How to Guide Failing Kids (8-18) to Personal Excellence, at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in the school's Commons.

Parents experiencing stress because their child is struggling academically will hear strategies to motivate their child and teach him or her to be in control.

Admission is free. Reservations are not needed.

New you : The Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville, will offer a "New Year, New You" fitness promotion, allowing residents to purchase a 25-, 50- or 100-visit pass with no expiration date and no additional monthly fees. A medical clearance form and orientation is required. The promotion is valid until Friday.

The community center will hold a camp fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 7. Families will have an opportunity to learn about local camps and camp-related organizations and meet camp representatives. Child care will be available.

Lunar new year : The Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville, will present a Lunar New Year Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow. The event is for adults and children age 5 and older. Children in eighth grade or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are $10; $25 for families of up to five; and $6 for seniors. Group discounts are available for 10 or more people. Registration will be accepted until space is filled. Information: 410-313-7275 or
