'State of Howard County' address set Wednesday

County Executive Ken Ulman will deliver his "State of Howard County" address at the Howard County Chamber of Commerce annual luncheon Wednesday in the Grand Ballroom at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City.

The luncheon will begin at 11 a.m.; the county executive is expected to speak at about 12:30 p.m. The event, which requires tickets, is for Chamber members, the business community and guests.

'Woman to Woman' lecture today at HCC

N'Shei Chabad, the Howard Community College Jewish Student Union and the Jewish Federation of Howard County will kick off a lecture series, "Woman to Woman," at 6:30 p.m. today in Monteabaro Hall in Howard Community College's Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Writer and speaker Sara Esther Crispe will discuss the five levels of communication according to Kabbalah in a talk titled, "Did You Hear What I Meant to Say? - The Art of Successful Communication."

A dessert reception will be held after the talk. Everyone is welcome. A donation of $10 is suggested.

'Live the dream' King celebration

The Howard County Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission will present its 24th annual celebration of the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 18 at Howard Community College's Smith Theater. The event is free and will begin with a reception at 2 p.m. and a program at 3 p.m. This year's theme is "Embrace the dream; Live the dream. Together, we can do it!"

The celebration will include entertainment by several cultural groups, presentation of awards to student winners of the essay and poster contest related to Dr. King and his legacy, and presentation of the "Commission Award" to a person who exemplifies the spirit of Dr. King's message.

The commission asks that attendees bring a canned food item to support Howard County's Food Bank. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for a future "King Day of Service."

HCC trustees budget session Wednesday

The Board of Trustees of Howard Community College will hold a budget work session at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the fourth-floor dining room of the college's Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall (RCF-401), 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Those who want to speak should make a written request to the secretary-treasurer of the board at least 72 hours before the meeting to be included on the agenda. In some situations, the board can give visitors who have not presented an advance request an opportunity to speak, although it reserves the right to limit these presentations in order to complete items on the agenda. Kickoff rally Tuesday for June Relay for Life

Howard County's 2009 Relay for Life, an overnight event designed to celebrate surviving cancer and raise money for the American Cancer Society, will hold a kickoff rally at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the east Columbia branch library, 6600 Cradlerock Way.

The relay will be held June 5 and June 6 at Hammond High School. During the event, team members camp out and one team member walks or runs on the track throughout the night. A Survivors' Lap, Luminaria Ceremony and Kids' Walk are also planned.

The kickoff will feature food, a Facebook presentation, fundraising ideas and fun.
