After a whirlwind house tour four years ago aimed at getting her more space in Canton, a disappointed Chantel Ornstein found nothing that grabbed her. But then the lawyer saw an end-unit rowhouse in the midst of being rebuilt and enlarged, and liked the additional light the side windows would bring.
She climbed the stairs to what would become two decks atop the third floor and bought the house on the spot. "As soon as I saw the view from the roof, I said, 'I'll take it,' " she said.
The view is of Baltimore and the harbor.
Ornstein included custom features, tailored to simplifying life and creating relaxing spaces.
About the house : The original two-story structure was built in 1910, though little original beyond one wall remains. The house, featured on the 2007 Canton Home and Garden Tour, has three bedrooms, three full bathrooms, one powder room and two gas fireplaces. All floors are either oak or ceramic tile, and ceilings are 9 feet high, with recessed lighting.
On the first floor, the living room has a coffered ceiling and a fireplace with a stone surround. Behind it is a kitchen with an eat-in area, maple cabinets, stainless-steel appliances and granite countertops, an island with a stovetop and built-in wine cooler. The main level also includes a powder room. The kitchen opens to a slate patio and a parking pad.
The house had more room than Ornstein needed. "I turned the basement into a wine room. The built-in cabinets were perfect for wine racks," she said. That still left her room for a full bathroom, done in ceramic tile, and a storage area.
