BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo told Jagodzinski on Saturday that his job would be in jeopardy if he went through with the Jets interview. Jagodzinski met with the team Tuesday night.
A few hours later, at a meeting lasting about 25 minutes, DeFilippo told Jagodzinski he was out.
DeFilippo said he fired Jagodzinski, 45, over a "difference of vision for the future." Jagodzinski has been BC's coach for two years and had three years left on his contract.
Jagodzinski was fired "without cause," DeFilippo said, an indication the coach would be paid at least some of the money remaining on his contract.
The job was Jagodzinski's first as a head coach after 22 years as an assistant, 14 in college and eight in the NFL. He led the Eagles to two Atlantic Coast Conference title games but lost both to Virginia Tech. Boston College was 11-3 in his first season and 9-5 in 2008.
Navy:: Ken Niumatalolo agreed to a contract extension. Terms were not released.
Niumatalolo is coming off the most successful season for a first-year head coach at Navy in the modern era. The Midshipmen finished with an 8-5 record and a school-record sixth straight Commander in Chief's Trophy, appeared in a school-record sixth straight bowl game - a 29-19 loss to Wake Forest in the EagleBank Bowl - and won an NCAA-record fourth consecutive national rushing title.
Niumatalolo, an ex-Mids assistant, replaced Paul Johnson, who became head coach at Georgia Tech.
"The Naval Academy has made a significant commitment to me and my family, for which we are eternally grateful," Niumatalolo said.
