Patricia R. Benson, a founder and former co-owner of an Annapolis automobile dealership who was active in community affairs, died Sunday of renal failure at Community Hospital in Naples, Fla. The former longtime Annapolis resident was 72.
Patricia Rodgers was born in Washington and raised in Baltimore and Westminster.
After graduating from Westminster High School in 1954, she worked for several years as a secretary at the Westminster Trust Co.
She was married in 1959 to her high school sweetheart, George Russell Benson Jr., and in 1971 the couple established Benson Motor Cars in Annapolis.
Mrs. Benson was an active volunteer with the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Hammond Harwood House, Rotary Inner Wheel and the Severn School.
Mrs. Benson and her husband were charter members of Severna Park United Methodist Church.
After selling the business in 2000, the couple moved to Marco Island, Fla., where they became members of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the Hideaway Beach Club.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Benson is survived by two daughters, Katie Nivens of Towson and Caroline Tringali of Alexandria, Va.; and three grandchildren.
