Harford schools name interim superintendent

The Harford County Board of Education has chosen a longtime teacher and administrator to serve as interim superintendent of the school system.

Patricia L. Skebeck, who began her teaching career in 1964 and has served as executive director of elementary education since 1997, was appointed yesterday. She will serve until July 1 in the position left open by the unexpected death last week of Jacqueline C. Haas. Board members said they will begin a nationwide search for Haas' successor this month.

Skebeck said in a news release yesterday that she will carry on her predecessor's legacy "by moving Harford schools forward through this devastating time."

Board members and schools officials, who announced the appointment after the weekly senior staff meeting yesterday morning, said they expect Skebeck to continue the work initiated by Haas. They said they would have no further comment until after a public memorial service for Haas at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Aberdeen High School. Haas died after suffering an asthma attack at her Aberdeen home.

Skebeck, a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, began her teaching career at Mars Estates Elementary in Baltimore County. She joined Harford schools 15 years later, and after several years in the classroom she moved to principal positions at several elementary schools.

She holds a master's degree in education from what is now Towson University and has done postgraduate work at Loyola College in Maryland. She was recognized for her contributions to education with a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 1994.
