I have a 26-hour layover in Shanghai, China. Can I store my luggage at the airport and do some sightseeing? Are there short-stay hotels?
Because Shanghai is an important business center and a common stopover on Asia routes, Pudong International Airport is well-prepared for travelers like you. Here is a rundown on offerings, with recommendations from tourism and airport officials:
If you decide to stow your luggage and do some exploring, you'll find left-luggage facilities in both Terminal 1 (International Departure Hall, between Gates 10 and 11) and Terminal 2 (International Departure Hall, Level 3, near Island A).
For a short hotel stay, check out the three-star hotel on the Transfer Level of the main terminal. "You will need to provide your boarding pass before registering," China Tourism spokesman Min Seng Chew said. "It is also possible to reserve a room in advance by calling 011-86-21-6834-6490."
If you decide on an overnight stay, two hotels are on the airport site: the Jinjiang Inn Pudong Airport Hotel (011-86-21-6835-3568) and the Ramada Pudong Airport Shanghai Hotel (ramadaair portpd.com).
A little farther away, in Pudong, you'll find the Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong (ichotelsgroup.com); the Intercontinental Pudong Shanghai (shanghai.intercontinental.com); and the Purple Mountain Hotel.
Numerous providers offer half-day and full-day tours of the city, including the Jade Buddha Temple, People Square, Shanghai Museum, Yuyuan Garden, the Bund, the French Concession District and Shanghai Old Street. Among the providers is Gray Line, which offers hotel pickup for its tours; check gray line.com and then e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for reservations.
If you'd like to solidify your tour plans well before leaving the States, Chew suggests you contact your Shanghai hotel concierge or book a tour through a U.S.-based agency such as China Travel Service (chinatravelservice.com) or China International Travel Service USA (citsusa.com). That way you can ensure airport pickup and drop-off. With Pudong Airport about 20 miles from central Shanghai, it may be worth any additional cost.
