Silver Spring man arrested after chase
A 21-year-old Silver Spring man was arrested after he stole a Mercedes, led police on a chase and jumped in the Chesapeake Bay in an attempt to escape, county police said.
According to police, about 11 p.m. Wednesday, a Laurel man had parked his 2003 Mercedes in the lot of Crazy Otto's Sports Bar in the 1300 block of Defense Highway in Crofton. Another man walked up to the car, pointed a gun at the owner and told him to throw his keys on the ground, police said.
The gunman drove the Mercedes off the parking lot with the owner still in the car and then ordered him out a short distance away. Police, alerted by witnesses, found the Mercedes heading west on Davidsonville Road and put sticks in the road, deflating both right tires.
Pursued by officers from the Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority, Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Department and county police, the man drove the Mercedes across the Bay Bridge and down a pier in Stevensville. He ran out of the car and jumped into the water, police said.
Officers aided by dogs pulled Jamar Lewis Gomez, of the 11000 block of Lockwood Drive, out of the water and charged him with carjacking, armed robbery, kidnapping and other related charges, police said.
A 1998 Toyota that Gomez allegedly left in the parking lot of Crazy Otto's had been reported stolen the day before in Howard County, police said.
