Grambling tops Southern to reach SWAC title game

Greg Dillon accounted for 287 yards and two touchdowns, and Grambling State clinched a spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference title game with a 29-14 victory over Southern in the Bayou Classic yesterday in New Orleans.

Dillon was 9-for-13 for 151 yards with a score. He also rushed for 136 yards and a score for Grambling (10-2, 7-0). His performance helped second-year coach Rod Broadway win his first Bayou Classic and his second SWAC West Division title.

If Southern (6-5, 5-2) had won, it would have forced a three-way tie among Grambling, Southern and Prairie View atop the SWAC West Division.

Tulsa 38, Marshall 35: : Tarrion Adams ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Golden Hurricane (10-2, 7-1 Conference USA) past the host Thundering Herd (4-8, 3-5) to clinch the league's West Division title. Tulsa came into the game needing help to reach its second consecutive conference championship game. The Golden Hurricane benefited from Rice knocking off Houston.

Rice 56, Houston 42: : Chase Clement threw for 381 yards and five touchdowns as the Owls (9-3, 7-1 Conference USA) prevented the Cougars (7-5, 6-2) from clinching the West Division. Houston lost to Rice for the first time since 2004.

Tennessee 28, Kentucky 10: : The host Volunteers (5-7, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) sent coach Phillip Fulmer out after 17 seasons with one last win over the Wildcats (6-6, 2-6), extending the nation's longest active winning streak by one team over another to 24 games.

Florida Atlantic 57, Florida International 50, OT: : Rusty Smith threw five touchdown passes, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Owls (6-6, 4-3 Sun Belt) past the Golden Panthers (4-7, 3-4) in Miami. The teams scored a combined 56 points in the fourth quarter.
