Mercy midfielder Jordan Stenger has showed a knack for scoring timely goals this season.
Yesterday, the trend continued in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference quarterfinals against defending league champion St. Vincent Pallotti.
Stenger scored with less than two minutes left in the first 10-minute overtime session, lifting the No. 11 Magic to a 1-0 win over the No. 12 Panthers in blustery, cold weather at Notre Dame Prep.
Stenger found open space at the top of the penalty area and unleashed a shot that was headed for the right side. But a Pallotti defender deflected the shot in front and it found its way into the left corner. Stenger has five goals this season, four of them game-winners, with three in overtime.
"In the windy conditions, we just wanted to stay controlled, keeping the ball on the ground and also stay aggressive and focused," Mercy coach Albert Oni said. "We got a great shot from Jordan Stenger. She's been scoring a lot of big goals, and we've been letting her carry us lately."
