Woman, 26, in critical condition after being shot at home; acquaintance says she is pregnant

The Baltimore Sun

A woman who was shot in the head in her Crofton home Monday afternoon was pregnant, an acquaintance said yesterday.

The victim, whom friends and neighbors identified as Jodi Torok, 26, was in critical condition yesterday afternoon, a spokeswoman for Maryland Shock Trauma Center said.

"She is a quiet girl, happy all the time," said A.J. O'Dell, who said he is the boyfriend of Torok's roommate. "She's the type of person who would have no enemies whatsoever."

Torok is about three months pregnant, O'Dell said.

Anne Arundel County police have identified "persons of interest" in the shooting, and they believe the shooter was someone the victim knew, spokesman Sgt. John Gilmer said.

Torok, a hairstylist at Regis Salon in Annapolis Mall, had lived in a townhouse in the 1600 block of Hart Court since June.

The house is owned by Jessica Higgs, a manager at the salon who also lives there, O'Dell said.

O'Dell, who is Higgs' boyfriend, was at the house yesterday to pack some of her belongings because she did not want to return to the home.

Torok had been talking to a friend on the telephone about 3 p.m. Monday when she said a man was knocking on the door, O'Dell said. Torok told her friend that there was a salesman at the door and that she would call her back, but the friend did not hear from her again, O'Dell said.

About 5:30 p.m. Monday, Higgs came home and found Torok slumped in the foyer of the home with a gunshot wound to the head, O'Dell said.

Investigators searched the house for most of Monday evening, O'Dell said.
