Foundation announces award recipients

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County has announced the recipients of the philanthropist, volunteer and youth awards for 2008.

Award winners are Edward St. John, Philanthropist of the Year; Tony and Penny Evans, the first couple Volunteers of the Year; and Anne Bukowski, Youth Philanthropist of the Year.

St. John has contributed to almost 20 nonprofit, educational and artistic organizations in Anne Arundel County, including a $5 million gift to Severn School, during the past several years.

Tony and Penny Evans have been active in a variety of health, artistic, civic, political and educational organizations during the past 35 years.

A recent graduate of Annapolis High School, Bukowski, 18, is honored for her work with the school's Parent Teacher Student Organization.

She increased membership, donating more than 1,000 hours to the project.

The winners will receive their awards at the Celebration of Philanthropy in Anne Arundel County Luncheon on Nov. 14 at the Doubletree Hotel on Holiday Court in Annapolis.

Reflective vests for kids

State Highway Administration offices are offering reflective vests to parents for their children to wear while trick-or-treating Friday night. The vests provide visibility to motorists.

The Vests for Visibility Program lends safety vests to parents and guardians free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Vests will be handed out from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and must be returned by Nov. 7.

Longwood Gardens trip

The Meade Area Garden Club is sponsoring a trip to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa., on Dec. 4 to see holiday lighting and decorations.

The cost of the bus is $38 for garden club members and $43 for nonmembers.

Group rate admission to Longwood is $12 for all and will be collected on the bus. No refunds will be given after Nov. 8. The bus will leave about 12:45 p.m. from the Ridgeview Shopping Center at Route 175 and Rockenbach Avenue behind the Taco Bell, and return to the shopping center about 9 p.m.
